Benefits of Distance Education in Canada
Distance education is a growing field in Canada with an increasing number of Canadian institutions offering online options for courses and even entire programs of study. More students are recognizing the advantages of distance education and are putting it to work for them. In Canada, post-secondary education accommodates the most distance education students. Post-secondary students take advantage of distance education to meet their educational goals by attending university without being restricted by location, selecting flexible course schedules, and taking advantage of university resources outside the classroom and campus.
Post-secondary students no longer need to live in a metropolitan province or college area, or choose to make a long commute, in order to complete their coursework and obtain a degree or certificate from an accredited Canadian university. Distance education in Canada gives these students more options to choose from by taking away the limitations of location. Students are able to select their institution of study by the factors that matter most to them without concern about moving to a new location. They can focus on other considerations, such as reputation, programs offered, funding, and curriculum, when choosing which university to attend without worrying about relocating or commuting. Canadian universities are able to accommodate a larger number of students and increase enrolment without being limited by their physical space, such as the number of classrooms available on-campus.
Students who are able attend courses on-campus at their Canadian institution may still choose to take advantage of some distance education courses in order to have greater freedom in their course schedule. Students who select a distance education program or course can complete their coursework from anywhere. They can save time by not commuting, and, although they may have some scheduled times for their online course to meet, they may also be able to attend their course when they choose depending on the course design.
Distance educations programs in Canada do not exclude their students from all of the resources offered to students who attend on-campus. Although students may not be physically able to visit campus regularly, they can still take advantage of campus resources through online means or over the phone. For example, Canada’s distance learning students can conduct research through online portals to their university libraries, consult with admission or career counsellors online or over the phone, and communicate with their instructors and advisors as needed.
Distance education programs are allowing Canadian students to pursue their educations in new ways. The availability of these programs is growing as students and institutions are evaluating their options and choosing to participate in increasing numbers. For many post-secondary students, the conveniences of not being bound by a campus or strict course schedule, yet still being able to complete their desired course of study and access university resources, makes distance learning in Canada an attractive option.
